03Yarns and fibres

Which yarns and fibres can you use?

Almost any. As an Italian knitwear manufacturer we buy most of our yarn from the spinners of Biella and Prato, cashmere and merino first, but cotton, silk blends, alpaca and mohair are just as at home in our workshops. The yarn sets most of the price and the hand of a knit, so it's the first choice we make with you, with cones and swatches before sampling.

05Ways to work

Private label or white label: how do you want to work?

As a private label and custom knitwear manufacturer, we develop your collection from your own tech pack. If you don't have one yet, our design team makes it, with the yarn and stitch plan. White label starts from the workshop's existing models.

  • Private label with tech design

No tech pack yet? Our designers draw the collection, then it runs as private label.

ItalyInside the workshops

Why manufacture knitwear in Italy?

Because Italian knitwear is still the benchmark your customers recognise, and because the districts put spinner, dye house, knitting workshop and finishing within a short drive of each other. Our Italian knitwear manufacturers are specialised, verified and open to visits.

06MOQ and pricing

What is the MOQ and how is the price built?

We are a low MOQ knitwear manufacturer: our reference is 50 pieces per style, split across sizes and colours. Every model is evaluated on its own, and three things set the price per piece.

  • YarnThe biggest driver. Cashmere, merino, cotton or blends, and how many grams the garment uses: a chunky 3gg sweater takes three times the yarn of a fine-gauge one.
  • Gauge and techniqueFully fashioned, seamless, jacquard and intarsia programmes, hand-finished linking and details each add machine time and setup.
  • QuantityThe price per piece drops as the run grows. Samples are priced separately, usually 2–3× the unit price.

Every project is priced on your specifications. If you have a target cost, tell us up front: it changes which yarn and gauge we propose during sampling.

Discuss your project with our team 2 minutes to describe it.
No commitment.
07Timing

How long does knitwear production take?

Two steps, one after the other. Most delays come from yarn availability and from changes after the sample is approved, so we book the yarn early and lock every comment in writing before production starts.

  • Step 13–5 weeks

    Yarn, prototype and samples

Yarn sourcing and swatches, first prototype, fit and hand corrections, and the pre-production sample you approve with its measurement chart.

  • Step 23–5 weeks

    Production

Knitting, linking, washing and finishing, quality control on measurements and surface, and shipping, once the sample is approved.

Indicative timelines. Yarns not in stock at the spinner, jacquard programmes and hand-finished details can take longer. August and the Christmas weeks are closed in the districts: plan around them.

FAQQuestions

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for a knitwear manufacturer in Italy?

Our reference is 50 pieces per style, split across sizes and colours. Every model is evaluated on its own: fine-gauge pieces and simple stitches can start lower, while jacquard, intarsia or special yarns may need more because of the machine setup.

How much does it cost to manufacture knitwear in Italy?

The unit price depends on three things: the yarn (cashmere, merino, cotton, blends) and how much of it the garment uses, the gauge and technique (fully fashioned, seamless, jacquard, hand-finished details) and the quantity. Samples are priced separately, usually 2–3× the unit price. Every project is priced on your specifications.

How long does knitwear production take?

Yarn sourcing, first prototype and the pre-production sample take 3–5 weeks. Production takes another 3–5 weeks depending on volume, gauge and finishing. Yarns that are not in stock at the spinner and jacquard programmes can add time.

Do I need a tech pack to start?

A tech pack is always needed before a workshop can knit: measurements, gauge, stitch, yarn and trims. If you do not have one, our design team builds it from your sketches or references, with technical drawings and a yarn and stitch plan, before sampling starts. If you have one, we review it.

Which types of knitwear do you manufacture?

Sweaters and crewnecks, turtlenecks and mock necks, cardigans and zip cardigans, polo knits and knit tops, knit dresses and skirts, co-ords, cable and chunky knits, cashmere hoodies, scarves, beanies and knitted accessories, for women, men and children, through specialised workshops in the Italian knitwear districts.

Which yarns can you source?

Cashmere, extra-fine merino, lambswool and Shetland, alpaca and mohair, cotton and cotton-cashmere, silk and viscose blends, linen, plus recycled and certified yarns (GCS, RWS, GOTS) from Italian spinners in Biella and Prato. Yarns are sourced with you, with cones and swatches before sampling.

Do you ship worldwide and handle customs?

Yes. Italian Artisan ships worldwide and manages customs, duties and the fibre composition, care and origin labelling your market requires, so your order arrives without surprises.
